Sealing tapes for HVAC

When do you need aluminum sealing tapes

An HVAC system consists of various components; ducts, pipes,  power unit, connectors, etc. These components are usually assembled on site into an HVAC system. The joints between components and other seams need to be sealed to secure moisture barriers that combat rust, mold and contamination for years. The sealing tape also serves to prevent loss of flow pressure as a result of possible air leaks at the joints or seams.

The substrate of joints, building and construction code requirements or indoor/outdoor usage, eventually drive what sealing tape will be most suitable for what situation.

ABI Tape has several sealing tapes available with various backings (plain foil, Foil-Skrim-Kraft (FSK), All Service Jacket (ASJ), etc.) and adhesive systems (rubber or acrylic). Some of them are UL® certified, others innovative and custom made. Plenty of sealing solutions with ABI Tape.

Sealing tape in Action

Ideal Seal 2000 is the flagship product among our aluminum sealing tapes.  It features a premium grade foil, an acrylic adhesive system and a 90 micron thick paper liner. It is generally used as a vapor seal and it ensures the integrity of seams and joints on both fiberglass duct boards and flexible duct systems.

The thick silicone release paper liner facilitates easy-removal. The liner can optionally be precut (kiss-cut) so that the liner “breaks” which saves valuable time and frustration for the applicator. The UL code (either UL 181A-P and UL 181B-FX Listed) can be printed on foil, so that it remains visible once applied. Ideal Seal 2000 has a limited 20-year warranty.

What are UL certified tapes and when are they needed

In some HVAC applications, UL listings are critical for code compliance. This means the HVAC tape used has the proper adhesion and exceptional shear strength needed to stay in place effectively for the life of the HVAC system.

In order to receive a UL 181 listing, tapes that are used to seal air duct and air connectors, are subjected to a battery of tests, including: Flame Resistance, Mold Growth & Humidity, Temperature, Static Load, Impact, Pressure, Collapse, Tension, Torsion and Leakage Test. This testing determines if an HVAC tape will be able to receive a UL listing. The two most commonly used HVAC tapes are UL 181A-P and UL 181B-FX.

ABI Tape has a number of UL 181 certified tapes.

Two commonly used UL certificates on HVAC tapes are UL 181A-P and UL 181B-FX. So what’s the difference??

UL 181A-P
UL 181A-P is the standard for HVAC tapes used to seam, seal and join rigid ductwork (or duct board). This listing has more stringent testing requirements that must be passed in order to be approved and must be made of either aluminum or aluminum alloy foil with a minimum width of 2.5 inches. These tapes must also be constructed with a release liner.
UL 181B-FX
UL 181B-FX is the standard for HVAC tapes used to seam, seal and join Class 1 Flex Duct. Products meeting this listing are required to meet a minimum width of 1.825 inches, and can be made from a variety of materials such as foil, film or cloth.
